I know it was the first game, and Larry will probably provide some reason to be optimistic, but I don't see how Auburn wins 8 games this year. If I was B. Cox's mom, I would not allow him to play against LSU. They might kill him.
Its wasn't as bad as it looked (ok, it was), but let's look a little closer. Would you have rather played Western Kentucky or Kansas State? I think we got a very good look at our team, and the coaches know where our weaknesses are. Offensive line, running back blocking, and quarterback audibles into the wrong play. I beleive that all of these are curable. The O-line may take a little while to mature, but these guys will be very good. As bad as the offense was, it still kept us within a score all game. I don't think Cox is a great QB, but I do think he is better than what he showed Sat night. Time will tell. We started using the tightends more in the second helf. The Defense is solid. We were playing without 3 starters in the second half and still shut them down. Overall, I think we learned way more than the teams that played the I-AA teams for openers. I hope everyteam puts 9 in the box and blitzes every down - we will be prepared for it. At least we better be.
By the way, I destroted both of you this week in JLM. Boner should get the scores up by mid-late this week.
Okay, my turn. I disagree with Larry on a couple of points and agree with him on a couple. First, Larry is 100% right in saying that as fans we should be glad AU played K-State instead of Cupcake St. It got us on TV and got us some solid pub. As for the players and coaches...I'm guessing they wish they would have called Western Carolina before Bama did. Look, unless you're looking to play in the BCS title game scheduling tough non conference games isn't that big of a deal. People crucified us for our OOC schedule in 2004 but it wasn't much weaker than UF's last year (FSU blew) or LSU's in 2003. We seriously just got severely unlucky in 2004. First, the number 1 and 2 teams in the preseason polls won every game and never dropped. That has NEVER happened in the eras of polls. Second, it was Oklahoma and USC, two of the top five college football programs of all time. We weren't jumping those two teams no matter who we played non conference. Getting back to this year...it is generally regarded around the country that our SEC schedule is the toughest conference slate of any BCS team. Four road games against 4 potential top ten teams. If we win those four games and go undefeated, it wouldn't matter who we scheduled non conference to start the year. We would be playing in the BCS title game. Also, to make it all a moot point...Michigan. Now, as for what we learned about Auburn. Our offensive line was, well...offensive. They couldn't pick up blitzes, they couldn't open any holes for the running backs, and they generally got pushed around by a quality but not championship level opponent. Our D is probably as good as advertised but still has a penchant for the ol' bend but don't break tendencies that can come back to haunt you if someone does the ol' three trick plays in a row and one happens to work routine. Kicking game was solid as far as FGs/PATs, punting and returns. The kick coverage on both punts and kickoffs left a little to be desired. Overall, I was happy we got the win but really didn't see it coming. I thought we were dead in the water. Perhaps I should have a bit more faith in a coaching staff that has led us to a 33-5 record in the past three seasons. Having said that I think this weekend's game will be just as tough if not tougher than the K-State game. Also, K-State's coach is going to be a good one and I think that team can win the Big 12 North this year. Their QB has a chance to be an All-American type player. He has size, talent, and poise. I couldn't have been more impressed with the way he managed the game on a bum wheel. If not for some earned and stupid penalties on K-State, as well as some dubious penalties the refs called on K-State we don't win that game. Finally...Larry talks a big talk about destroying people in JLM. Well, his mouth almost wrote a check his picks couldn't cash. The final scores were 125-121-99...LMJ. I'll try and write a detailed description later. For now I have to crank out a rough draft of a classroom management experiment I'll use in my student teaching class later this semester. Enjoy the rest of the day gentlemen.

Thank you Larry for bringing a calm, rational approach. I like your outlook.

One more thing, Gabe McKenzie should be the starting TE over Tommy Trott!!!
