Once upon a time in the 1970s, Bear Bryant and Shug Jordan went fishing together. The fishing was slow, and the Bear sort of wondered out loud whether he could really walk on water, the way Tide fans said he could. Why don't you find out, Shug said. And so Bryant, never one to back away from a challenge, stepped out of the boat -- and promptly sank to the bottom.
As he swam to the boat and reached up to grab Jordan's hand, Bryant said, "Shug, promise me you won't tell Alabama fans I can't walk on water." "Sure nuff," said Shug, "just as long as you don't tell Auburn people I saved you from drowning."
