This is a funny, yet realistic article about US athletics on the world stage. Hey, at least we won the Tour de France 7 straight years... very good comparison of coach Arena to Larry Brown after the US basketball debacle in the last summer Olympics.
That is an interesting article. Personally, I believe that American athletes are driven by the almighty dollar. If it's not going to benefit them financially, why particpater (see Olympic basketball and World Classic baseball). Soccer is a perfect example of this. Youth soccer is the biggest sport from a participation standpoint. What happens after highschool?? Do they go play at D-1 schools and then get multi-million dollar contracts? I don't think so.
I guess we dominate golf on a world stage, but do we really dominate cycling? I mean Lance won one race each year for 7 years, but to me that's not dominating. That would be like Tiger only playing in the Masters and winning it every year. Plus, was Lance's team made up of all Americans?
Like I said in a previous post. All this chatter about US soccer is probably a good thing in the long run. I'd love to hear Fil's input, because I believe there needs to be changes to the system that develops the players.
